Directly in front of the Salt Lake Assembly Hall in Temple Square, a complex owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the middle of Salt Lake City, an obelisk stands with two bronze seagulls perched on top. It’s a monument to the miracle of the gulls, an event early in the history of the Mormon pioneers during which, according to accounts, a flock of divinely sent seagulls descended upon Salt Lake Valley to save the settlers from a plague of insects that were devouring their crops.
I came upon this story after seeing a Tiktok of what appeared to be a swarm—and I mean truly a swarm—of large bugs inundating someone’s yard, carpeting the ground and crawling all the way up the outer walls of their house.
